How to Pick an Advent Study for Your Group

If you are the woman who ended up in charge of choosing this year's Advent study, this is for you. Ten minutes here saves you a December of regret. Here is what actually matters, in order.

1. Pick for your busiest member, not your keenest

The group lives or dies by whether the homework gets done. A beautiful 30-minute-a-day study that three of your eight women complete produces guilt, not growth. Look at the daily time cost first and choose for the mom of three, not for the retired saint who reads commentaries for fun. Ten to fifteen minutes a day is the honest December number for most groups.

2. Count the weeks backwards from Christmas

Advent 2026 begins Sunday, November 29. A 4-week study means meetings the weeks of Nov 29, Dec 6, Dec 13, and Dec 20. If your church calendar dies after mid-December, choose a study whose best material is not in week 4, or start a week early.

3. Check what leading actually requires

Read the leader material before you commit. Questions to ask: Does it give you an actual meeting plan with time cues, or just "discuss"? Does it require you to teach content, or does the study teach and you facilitate? Video-based studies (Lifeway is the classic home of these) lower the leading burden but need a screen and longer meetings. Discussion-script studies need nothing but a living room.

4. Do the printing math

Printed workbooks cost per head and need ordering lead time; December stock-outs are real, so order in October. PDF studies are instant but check the license: printing one purchased copy for a whole group is not usually allowed. Look for an explicit group or leader license. 5. Study or devotional: decide on purpose

A devotional is read-and-reflect; it asks little and comforts much. A study puts the passage in front of each woman and asks her to notice what it says. Groups discuss studies better, because everyone looked at the same text instead of comparing feelings about a reading. If your group has never done a study, Advent's short, story-rich passages are the easiest on-ramp of the year.

6. Ask the awkward theology question early

Whatever you pick, skim a sample week and ask: does the commentary stay inside what the passage says? Does it promise women outcomes God has not promised? Advent touches waiting, infertility, and loss; material that handles those with care protects the women at your table. Any publisher worth buying from will show you sample pages before you pay.

A simple decision path

• Group wants video teaching and has 90-minute meetings: a Lifeway-style video study.
• Group wants printed books and plans ahead: The Daily Grace Co, ordered by October.
• Group is busy, budget-conscious, or late deciding: a PDF study with a group license, printed at home.
• Group is really a reading circle, not a study group: pick a devotional on purpose and enjoy it without guilt.
