A Prayer for Patience with My Kids

You yelled, the door slammed or the little face crumpled, and now you are standing in the kitchen hating the sound of your own voice. You searched for a prayer for patience because you love them more than what just happened. Start here.

For the mom who just yelled

God, I lost it. The words came out sharper than I meant and I cannot take them back. Thank You that You are not standing over me with a clipboard. Forgive me, soften me, and give me the courage to go make it right in a minute. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion.”

Psalms 103:8 (BSB)

Slow to anger is who God is, and it is also what He grows in you. Notice the order of that verse: compassion and grace come first. That is how He is looking at you right now, in the kitchen, before you have fixed anything.

The morning rush

Father, it is 7:40, one shoe is missing, and my voice is already climbing. Before I raise it, help me breathe. The bus can be missed; these small hearts cannot. Give me a morning where my words send them out the door loved. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,”

James 1:19 (BSB)

Quick to listen, slow to speak. In a loud house, that verse is not a platitude; it is a plan. One breath between hearing and answering is often the whole battle.

The witching hour

Every mom knows the stretch between late afternoon and bedtime, when everyone is hungry, tired, and touching each other in the back seat. Pray this one at 4:45.

Lord, the hard hours are here again. I am out of patience and dinner is not made. Meet me in this exact hour with a gentleness that is not mine, because mine is gone. One kind voice in this kitchen is enough to change the whole evening. Let it be mine. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Proverbs 15:1 (BSB)

The apology, yes, to your child

Saying sorry to a four-year-old feels strange the first time. It is also one of the most powerful things a mother ever models. You are not losing authority; you are showing them what repentance looks like in a person they trust.

God, give me the humility to kneel down, look my child in the eye, and say I was wrong to yell, will you forgive me. Let my kids grow up knowing what a real apology sounds like, because they heard one at home. In Jesus' name, Amen.

When you are running on empty

Sometimes the short fuse is not a character problem. It is an empty tank. If you have been carrying everything for everyone, of course your patience is thin. God does not shame a tired mother; He sings over her.

“Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Galatians 6:9 (BSB)

“The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17 (BSB)
Father, I spend all day quieting little people. Tonight, quiet me. Quiet the guilt, quiet the replaying, quiet the fear that I am ruining them. Fill the tank I keep pouring out of, and let tomorrow start new. In Jesus' name, Amen.

He will quiet you with His love. The mother who spends her whole day soothing others has a God who soothes her.
