A Prayer Before a Doctor's Appointment

Maybe it is a routine checkup that does not feel routine this time. Maybe you have been putting this appointment off for months. Either way, you would rather not walk in alone, and you do not have to. Here are prayers for each step of the day.

The night before

God, tomorrow's appointment keeps floating up every time I close my eyes. You already know what tomorrow holds, and You are already there. Give me sleep tonight instead of rehearsals. Whatever the room brings, You will be in it before I am. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”

Deuteronomy 31:8 (BSB)

Goes before you. By the time you check in tomorrow, God has already been in that exam room. You are not walking toward the unknown; you are walking toward Someone.

In the car, before you walk in

Father, my hands are on the wheel and my heart is going faster than it should. Steady me for the next hour. Give the doctor wisdom, careful eyes, and enough time for my questions. Help me say the things I rehearsed and hear the things I need to hear. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.”

Isaiah 41:10 (BSB)

In the waiting room

Waiting rooms have their own kind of quiet. Everyone in those chairs is carrying something. This prayer is short enough to pray with your eyes open.

God, be in this room. For me, and for every person in these chairs. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

Psalms 56:3 (BSB)

Eight words. David wrote them while he was afraid, not after the fear passed. You do not have to feel brave for this verse to be true of you.

When it is your child's appointment

Somehow it is harder when it is not you on the table. If you are the mom in the little chair in the corner, holding the jacket and the fear at the same time, we wrote prayers for a mom whose child is sick. For today:

Father, that is my baby on the table, whatever age they are. Hold my face steady so my child borrows courage from it. Guide every hand that touches them today. And hold the part of me that is more scared than I am letting on. In Jesus' name, Amen.

If the news is hard

Most appointments end in the parking lot with relief and a juice box. Some do not. If you drove home today with words you were not ready for, do not rush past what you are feeling, and do not carry it alone tonight.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalms 23:4 (BSB)
God, I got news today that changed the shape of things. I do not have words yet, so let this be my prayer: stay close. Walk this valley with me one step at a time, and be near the people who love me while I tell them. In Jesus' name, Amen.

If you are now in the space between tests and answers, our page for waiting on test results was written for exactly those days, including the wait after a mammogram.
